We all give our time, talents, and indeed our lives in trade for money, freedom, fame, family and many other things. I often wonder if we know what we are trading for. In the barter that is our life, is what we give up truly worth the value of what we receive? Are we too quick to make the exchange? Do we think through the consequences of our actions before we have given away those things that we too late realize are of greater value?
Joan of Arc once said “Every man gives his life for what he believes. Every woman gives her life for what she believes. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and so they give their lives to little or nothing. One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it…and then it’s gone. But to surrender who you are and to live without belief is more terrible than dying – even more terrible than dying young.”
When was the last time you asked yourself what you believe, and what you give your life for? Maybe it is time to ask that question again.
